First look: I love the size and design of the box. It brings me back to the retro days of comics. The owners included information on the improvements for the service, and future themed preferences such as horror, kid’s, obscure, and more! I am interested to see the final result!
The first three comics are Birds of Prey Vol. 1 by DC Comics, and they are issues #34, #66, and #75. This is an ongoing series that features a kick-ass group of female superheroes created by Oracle and Black Canary. Throughout the years, the team has expanded with various of members such as the Huntress, Lady Blackhawk, Catwoman, and more and there is a total of three volumes of Birds of Prey. Being a fan of comics with strong female leads, I discovered this series later when the New 52 was released. Unfortunately, the synopsis is not available at this time.
Next is Silver Surfer: In Thy Name #2 by Marvel Comics.
“Seeking only to help the helpless, the Silver Surfer rids an alien city of a demonic threat and is declared a Savior by its beleaguered inhabitants. As assassinations, political maneuverings and simmering tensions fester in the shadows, the Surfer must question whether a figurehead – even a reluctant one – is responsible for the actions of his disciples…Brewing conflict leaps from the page, as artist Tan Eng Huat (Doom Patrol, Batman) and writer Simon Spurrier (2000AD, Gutsville) step-up a gear in the Surfer’s most explosive adventure yet.”

The next comic is Silver Surfer: Requiem #1 by Marvel Comics.
“The latest offering from the Marvel Knights line. Guest-starring the Fantastic Four!
For untold years Norrin Radd has surfed the galaxy, exploring the darkness between stars, witnessing the rise and fall of vast civilizations. Now his ride is about to come to an end. It starts with a small spot — a blemish that will spread until he is no more. Until then, the Silver Surfer would undertake his final voyage — to the one destination that has always eluded him. His journey starts where it began.”

We also received Silver Surfer/Warlock: Resurrection #1 by Marvel Comics.
“The Resurrection begins! Although he lost part of himself when he became the Silver Surfer, Norrin Radd can never forget the woman he loved from his days on Zenn-La. With Shalla-Bal’s death never far from his thoughts, the Surfer is more haunted than ever. But when Pip the Troll delivers a message from Adam Warlock, Surfer’s hope sparks anew. Warlock claims Shalla-Bal is alive! But if so, where is she?”

The last three comics we received are Vintage Magnus Robot Fighter #3 and Magnus Robot Fighter #14 and #15 by Valiant Comics. I don’t have the synopsis for Vintage Magnus Robot Fighter #3, but I do have it for Magnus Robot Fighter #14 and #15.
“Magnus journeys to the Martian Moon Phobos to deal with the asylum that 1-A created to house the mutated failures in his attempts to generate a robot fighter in “The Asylum Saga Part Two — Reckonings.”

“As Mothergod’s evil plans come into play, Magnus has to be convinced to try to do something about them in “The Torch Is Passed,” chapter four of the “Unity” saga which involved all of the comic titles published by Valiant at the time. Splash page of this issue mistakenly designates it as chapter three of the “Unity” saga when it is actually chapter four, as indicated on the cover.”

Final thoughts: Comic of the Month is ideal for casual readers who are more interested in picking up a comic or two for an occasional read. However, since the comic issues are random and can jump into the middle of the series, it might not be ideal for hardcore readers or those who want to be more invested in a comic. I used to run a comic/book subscription service so I understand how hard it can be to include the first issue of a series in every box, especially when they are older issues. Otherwise, Comic of the Month is perfect for new discoveries, especially if the series is ongoing!
